The built-in Samsung SSD cloning software

As we know, Samsung solid state drive (SSD) is popular among computer users due to its excellent performance. Along with it, Samsung offers a free tool for Samsung SSD cloning and migration, which is called Samsung Data Migration.

The latest version of Samsung Data Migration is Windows 10 compatible, so you can use it to migration operating system (OS) or move entire hard drive to SSD in Windows 10/8/7.

Steps of using this software are easy as well. You can connect your new Samsung SSD with an SATA-to-USB adapter or directly connect to the SATA port if that is available. After you successfully install Samsung Data Migration, you can select the source disk and target Samsung SSD to start the clone.

However, it is only available for part of Samsung SSD products, including 470 Series, 750 Series, 830 Series, 840 Series, 850 Series, 950 Series, 960 Series, etc. Thus, other manufacturers' SSDs CANNOT apply to this data migration software.

Samsung Data Migration software limitations

If the source hard drive has 2 or more partitions, only the first 2 partition will be transferred. If you have more than 1 disk installed, you can only clone the current system disk to SSD with Samsung Data Migration software.

While cloning the hard drive to Samsung SSD, you should never disconnect the disk. It is also recommended not to use the computer while cloning because any open files cannot be cloned properly. Some users also find that Samsung Data Migration won’t install on their computers, let alone the after cloning operations.

There are cases that Samsung Data Migration cloning failed or it cannot recognize your hard drive. In that case, you may want to find a Samsung Data Migration similar tool to help you upgrade your hard drive to SSD.

Free alternative to Samsung Data Migration

Here, AOMEI Backupper is a perfect alternative to Samsung Data Migration. It’s a free hard drive cloning software, supporting all kinds of Samsung SSD cloning. With professional design, you can clone hard drive or SSD to another with different size or partition style easily.

Unlike some of the other SSD cloning software, AOMEI Backupper enables you to use the computer or edit any files on the source disk without worrying about some files may not be copied correctly. Besides, it also provides more features to make the better experience of transferring data from hard drive to SSD, like Align partition to optimize for SSD, and Sector by sector clone. Windows 10/8/8.1/7/XP/Vista supported. Get it and have a try.

Cloning MBR drive (containing OS) to GPT drive is also supported on the paid version, such as, AOMEI Backupper Porfessional, AOMEI Backupper Server, etc. If needed, please upgrade to the advanced version according to your operating system.

How to do Samsung data migration in Windows 10 via freeware?

Generally, your SSD is much smaller than your HDD. With AOMEI Backupper, you do not have to resize partition before the clone. When cloning to a smaller SSD, the program will automatically resize the partition to fit on the target disk.

Case 1: Migrate HDD to smaller SSD

Step 1: Download the Samsung SSD clone software AOMEI Backupper, install and launch it. Select “Disk Clone” under “Clone” tab.

  • “Edit Partitions” is able to edit partition size and location as you wish.

  • “Sector by sector clone” will clone all sector on disk no matter they are used or not, even they are blank or bad.

Step 5: When the progress is 100%, click “Finish”.

Case 2: upgrade to larger SSD without leaving unallocated space

When cloning to a larger drive, some users may find out that the space on the cloned disk is the same as the source disk. The rest space is showing as unallocated space. With AOMEI Backupper, it is a different story. It allows you to edit partitions on the destination disk, so there will be no unallocated space on the cloned SSD.

Click Edit partitions in the Operation Summary screen, then you will see the 3 options in the following window. The last two options are available in Professional edition.

  • Copy without resizing partitions: all partitions will keep intact in size. While upgrading to larger disk, you’ll get unallocated space after cloning. While upgrading to smaller disk, the option is unavailable.

  • Add unused space to all partitions: You can select the second option to automatically fit all partitions to the entire disk or the third one to manually edit the partition size on the disk.

  • Manually adjust partition size: an advanced feature to resize partition and re-assign drive letter and so on.
