Why Need SSD Imaging Software ?
SSD is short for Solid State Drives and has more advantages than traditional hard drive, such as, faster speed of reading and writing, shock resistance, lower power consumption, and no noise. Because of these advantages, the SSD makes you feel so smoothly while using it as boot drive. And you will get better performance indeed.
On top of wanting to use good performance, you also need to keep data on it safe. All of them are irreplaceable and precious, so you cannot afford to lose them. At this moment, you need to make a copy of files on the SSD disk so as to get them back quickly when something bad happens. If it's a system disk, the system partition and boot files will be included while moving SSD to larger SSD. Thus, you don't need to reinstall Windows from scratch.
Best Free SSD Imaging Software - AOMEI Backupper Standard
AOMEI Backupper Standard is one of the best free SSD imaging software, which works well in Windows 11/10/8.1/8/7/Vista/XP. And it provides you with 2 imaging method and rich features to improve the task.
Disk Backup: It's to create an image file of entire disk, including OS, system settings, installed program, saved data, etc and requires a restoration before using it. Schedule Backup and Incremental Backup are supported.
Disk Clone: It will keep all the content on the new hard drive or SSD exactly the same as original SSD disk, and you can directly use it without restoring. If it's an SSD, you can further improve the disk performance with its SSD Alignment feature.
Both of them can help you make an exact copy of SSD disk, which one should you use? To protect data continously, try Disk Backup. To keep a fast recovery option, but not including changes made later, use Disk Clone.
Please download the best cloning software for SSD first, and give it a try. For server users, try AOMEI Backupper Server.
How to easily image SSD disk in Windows 10
Here I'll introduce you both imaging methods, you can choose based on your purpose, just create a copy or protect files on the SSD disk continuously.
Method 1: Create SSD Image in Windows 10 with Disk Backup
1. Launch the best free disk imaging software - AOMEI Backupper, select Backup > Disk backup subsequently.
2. Modify the Task Name to distinguish the disk backup from others. Click the Add Disk button, tap to select the SSD drive as source disk, and click Add.
3. Select a destination to save the SSD image file. You could choose backup Windows 10 to external hard drive, local disk, USB flash drive, NAS device, or network share as a destination.
4. Press the Start Backup button to create SSD image in Windows 10/8/7.
This only backup items on the SSD disk when you backed it up, not including changes made later. To keep all changes made later, you need to set Schedule Backup and image SSD automatically. You can choose among Daily, Weekly, Monthly, Event trigger, and USB Plug in. The last two premium features are available on the professional version.
By default this software will create one full backup and 6 incremental backup if you set a scheduled backup task. This may result in backup disk full issue in the long run, thus it's suggested to enable Backup Scheme and delete backup file automatically. You have 3 options, By quantity, By time, By daily/weekly/monthly. You need to upgrade now (5% off for one computer) before using it.
And the incremental backup has high requirement for recovery while differential backup is much easier. For differences between them, learn my previous article: Incremental or Differential Backup.
Besides, you still can enable email notification after the task finished. Comment, split, compress the backup image, or select a backup mode, etc.
Now, you can feel free to do your own things, this software will create disk backup for SSD and be sure there is always enough space to store new backups. And you don't need to worry about computer failure and data loss due to many reasons.
Method 2: Create SSD Image in Windows 10 with Disk Clone
The cloning method only keep the current status when you clone SSD disk, and it's much useful for replacing laptop hard drive or upgrading SSD to larger SSD. We also call it SSD cloning freeware. If you are in such a case, follow the steps below carefully.
1. Connect your SSD with your computer, make sure it can be detected by Windows. Launch the SSD cloning software - AOMEI Backupper Standard, choose Disk Clone under Clone tab.
2. Select the SSD disk as source disk, and hit Next.
3. Tap to choose another SSD as the destination disk, and click Next.
4. Check SSD Alignment to optimize performance of SSD disk including the lifespan and press Start Clone to create SSD image in Windows 10.
Except for SSD Alignment, you still can use Edit Partitions if your new SSD is larger. Usually, in this case, the extra space will be marked as unallocated space after cloning and you cannot use it for storage before repartition.
And this what Edit Partitions can do for you. You can choose to add unused space to all partitions or manually adjust partition size. If the source and destination disk is different, you will see another option - Convert the destination disk from MBR to GPT or vice versa. It works well in cloning MBR disk to GPT or GPT to MBR. This requires you to upgrade now and enjoy.
Also, you can choose to clone all sectors of SSD disk to another with Sector By Sector Clone. Note it requires the destination disk should be larger enough or at least equal to the source disk.
How to boot from the cloned SSD:
#1: Shut down your computer, replace the hard drive with the SSD, then boot from it;
#2: Restart the computer to boot into BIOS or UEFI BIOS to set up the first boot device is the cloned SSD, then boot from it.
With the help of free SSD imaging tool - AOMEI Backupper Standard, you could create SSD image easily in Windows 10/8/7. You can choose backup disk in Windows 10 and perform Disk Restore when necessary. Also, you could directly clone SSD disk to another one and you don't to restore image.
Moreover, AOMEI Backupper Professional is capable of creating incremental or differential backup to save more storage space, delete old backup image to free up disk space for new backup, migrating only Windows 10 to SSD while the target disk has insufficient space, etc.
Anyway, it's an excellent software to protect your data! Just download it to have a try! For unlimited PCs or servers, try AOMEI Backupper Technician or TechPlus edition.
