What are Offline Files?

Offline Files is a built-in sync feature in Windows 7/8/10, which works with Sync Center. It aims to make network files and folders available offline when you are not connected to the network. To make offline files folder availble offline on the local computer, you can choose to enable offline files.  After that, the offline files will be stored in system drive:Windows\CSC folder by default. But you still can change offline files location.

Why do you want to disable offline files?

Offline Files is very useful for you to access network resource while offline. But some users still want to disable offline files in Windows. Here are some reasons:

1. Offline files synchronization does not finish in Windows 7. In general, this error will occur in Windows 7 or Windows Server 2008 R2 when you start offline files sync. And you may receive an error message: the specified network name is no longer available.

2. There are too many conflicts when you sync offline files. If the file sync process has conflicts, the remaining offline files will be canceled.

3.Offline files cannot be activated. In general, you need to restart your computer after you enable offline files. But you still see the message “Offline files is enabled but not yet active. Restart this computer to activate Offline Files” after you restart your computer again and again.

4. Certain files will not be synced. By default, some files with file extension like .mdb, .ldb, .mdw cannot be synced.

5. Always available offline not working in windows 7. After you enable offline file folder, you still need to go to the mapped network drive and make the network files offline. But you cannot see always available offline option in the context menu after you right-click the specified files or folders.

As you can see from above, Offline Files is not perfect. It still has limitations. Thus, users cannot use securely. To avoid the unexpected problems, the best way is to turn off Offline Files in Windows 7.
