User Case: Samsung Clone SSD to Larger SSD

“Hey guys, its probably been asked a million times but ill still ask again. I just got my new Samsung SSD and want to move everything from my smaller SSD to my new one without losing stuff or having to reinstall windows. Is it possible to clone SSD to larger Samsung SSD? Thanks for any help in advance.”

Why Clone SSD to Lager Samsung SSD?

Samsung SSDs are produced by one of the most famous disk manufacturers, consistently delivering high performance, for example, the 870 EVO SSD can reach up to 560MB/s read and 530MB/s write. Thus, many users want to clone SSD to larger Samsung SSD to enjoy it. Also, there are two other important reasons:

  • Upgrade disk capacity: Samsung offers users with different capacities for SSD upgrade. For example, the 870 EVO has 5 capacities, ranging from 250GB to 4TB. The 960 has two capacities, namely 1TB and 2TB.
  • Suitable for a wide range of people: Samsung offers users multi SSD Series - EVO series, Pro series, Plus series, Portable SSD, etc, covering both cost-effective (eg: 870 EVO) and high-performance SSD (eg: 990 Pro).

Does Samsung SSD have cloning software?

All Samsung SSD series come with a cloning software named Samsung Data Migration to help users migrate the current operating system, installed programs, user data, etc to a new Samsung SSD. That’s to say, you can only use this software between two Samsung SSDs.

If one of the two SSD disks is not from Samsung, this software will not help you. In this case, you can choose to use one more compatible SSD cloning software like AOMEI Backupper Professional to clone SSD to a larger one in Windows 11, 10, 8, 7, XP, and Vista.

Then, how to use Samsung Data Migration and AOMEI Backupper? I’ll introduce you to the stepwise guide in detail. Please continue to read in the next section.

Two Effective Methods to Clone Samsung SSD to Larger SSD

Samsung Data Migration and AOMEI Backupper both help you to clone SSD to larger SSD Samsung and make sure it is bootable. Samsung Data Migration requires two Samsung SSDs while cloning. But if you want to clone Samsung SSD to other SSD brands, such as clone Samsung SSD to Crucial SSD, AOMEI Backupper will be a better choice.

Way 1: Clone Samsung SSD to Lager Samsung SSD with SDM

Before you start to clone Samsung SSD to a larger Samsung SSD with Samsung Data Migration, you need to pay attention to the following items:

  • All the data on the larger Samsung SSD will be deleted and it is not able to recover. Please backup files to external hard drive if you store any important data there.
  • If your target disk is NVMe SSD, You need to install Samsung NVMe drivers first. Otherwise, the cloned SSD may not boot.
  • If you are unsure of the status of your old SSD, run chkdsk /f to scan and fix any errors found. Otherwise, it will affect this cloning process.
  • Close all programs other than SDM, such as Dropbox, Skype, antivirus software etc., that are currently running.

Step 1.  Install Samsung SSD with SATA cable or PCIe connector and power line. If it is a brand new one, you need to initialize this disk in Disk Management and create a new partition on it.

  • Press Win + R and type diskmgmt.msc in the Run window to open Disk Management.
  • Right-click the new Samsung SSD and select Initialize Disk.
  • Select the disk number (eg: Disk 1) and partition style (MBR/GPT). Then, click OK.

InitializeTheDisk

  • Right-click the SSD disk unallocated space and select New Simple Volume. Follow the on-screen instructions to create one or more partition (s).

Step 2. Download Samsung Data Migration, install, and open it. This software will automatically scan and select the current system disk as the source disk. You just need to select the larger Samsung SSD as the destination disk.

Step 3. Click Start to Clone Samsung SSD to larger Samsung SSD. Wait until the cloning process completes, replace a smaller SSD with a larger SSD, and boot up.

Way 2: Clone Samsung SSD to larger SSD with AOMEI Backupper

Powerful SSD cloning software - AOMEI Backupper Professional also helps to clone Samsung SSD to larger SSD in Windows 11, 10, 8, 7, XP and Vista. Thanks to its excellent features, you can use it to do more than SDM:

It offers “Disk Clone”  and "Intelligent clone (default mode)" features to clone only used space on the SSD disk including the operating system, installed program, user data, etc.
Its “Edit Partition” feature helps to resolve the cloned SSD not showing full capacity issue. And you can choose to perform this operation manually or automatically. It is also able to clone MBR and GPT disks.
Its “SSD Alignment” feature has the ability to improve the read and writing speed of SSD disks, making them faster.
Unlike SDM, the software is compatible with Samsung EVO, Pro, Plus series, etc. and other SSD brands such as WD Black SN750, Crucial MX500, SanDisk Ultra, etc.

Now download this powerful cloning software and have a try.

Step 1. Open AOMEI Backupper Professional, and click Clone > Disk Clone.

Disk Clone

Notes:

  • The Professional version supports cloning both system disks (MBR/GPT) and data disks in Windows 11, 10, 8, 7, XP and Vista. For server users, try AOMEI Backupper Server
  • To clone a dynamic disk, try the “System Clone” and “Partition Clone” features.

Step 2. Choose the old Samsung SSD as the source disk and click Next.

Select Disk

Step 3. Choose the larger Samsung SSD as the destination disk and click Next.

Select Larger SSD

Note: You are able to select non-Samsung SSD as the destination disk, such as WD Black SN750, Crucial MX500, SanDisk Ultra etc. And the cloned SSD will remain bootable.

Step 4. Check SSD Alignment to improve SSD disk performance, and click Edit Partitions to clone and resize hard drive space. Then, click Start Clone to clone Samsung SSD to larger SSD.

Copy Without Resizing

Notes:

  • Edit Partitions: This feature offers you 3 options, namely “Copy without resizing partition”, “Add unused space to all partitions”, “Adjust the partition size manually”. If both Samsung SSDs has different partition style, you will also see “Convert the destination disk from MBR to GPT” or vice versa.
  • Sector By Sector Clone: It is a cloning mode that will clone all sectors of an SSD disk. It will take a lot of time and more space on target disk. Thus, you can use this feature but it’s not suggested.

Summary

Both SSD cloning software helps to perform Samsung clone SSD to larger SSD with full capacity and make the cloned SSD bootable. Personally, I prefer using AOMEI Backupper because its rich cloning features make this process easier.

With it, you can choose to clone entire SSD or OS only. And it will handle the disk space and partition style issue well with different features. More surprisingly, it can be used to clone Crucial MX500 SSD, clone WD HDD to SSD, clone MBR disk to GPT, etc.
