Therefore, some users would like to use FastCopy, TeraCopy to speed up the copy process. Actually, quick copy function has already embedded in Windows 7. This feature is called RoboCopy.

What is RoboCopy?

RoboCopy is a command-line directory and file replication command. It has been available as part of the Windows Resource Kit starting with Windows NT 4.0, and was first introduced as a standard feature in Windows Vista and Windows Server 2008. After being upgraded in Windows 7, it can support multithreading which means the copying speed has been greatly elevated.

  • Specifies the path to the source directory.

  • Specifies the path to the destination directory.

  • Specifies the file or files to be copied.

Some copy options

  • /s Copies subdirectories. Note that this option excludes empty directories.

  • /e Copies subdirectories. Note that this option includes empty directories.

  • /lev: Copies only the top N levels of the source directory tree.

  • /z Copies files in restartable mode.

  • /b Copies files in Backup mode.

  • /zb Uses restartable mode. If access is denied, this option uses Backup mode.

  • /efsraw Copies all encrypted files in EFS RAW mode.

  • /copyall Copies all file information.

Why do you need PowerShell RoboCopy equivalent?

RoboCopy does speed up the file duplicate, however, it is kind of complicated and troublesome. Also, Robocopy does not copy open files. Any process may open files for exclusive read access by withholding the FILE_SHARE_READ flag during opening. Therefore, RoboCopy is not useful for copying or backing up live operating system volumes.
