How do I clone hard drive with multiple partitions?

"I have a 1 TB hard drive with 4 partitions, including one system partition and three data partitions. I try to clone OS to SSD for a better performance and clone other data partitions to a new disk. Then, remove the old drive. I want to know if this works. Any suggestions are welcome. "

In my opinion, if you use the right software, the plan is feasible. Some of disk cloning software on the internet cannot clone the boot manager or boot files that is required for the boot process. I recommend you disk cloning software like AOMEI Backupper.

You can clone entire hard drive including partitions to SSD. If you want to separate the system partition and data partition, you can use system clone feature. After cloning system, you need to switch out the old drive and boot from the cloned drive, delete the system on the old drive after you ensure that the cloned drive is bootable and then use disk clone feature to clone the rest of data partitions.

Why clone a hard drive with multiple partitions?

As time goes by, the the old drive is with slow read\write speed. Maybe, your disk is almost full. Thus, some users may want to clone a hard drive with multiple partitions to another drive either HDD or SSD.

If you want to clone disk to larger disk, you can choose a HDD disk. It has a bigger capacity. If you want to get a better performance, you can get a SSD drive. That's because the SSD drive is much durable, faster, quieter, cooler. And nowdays SSDs get more space than before and cost less. In sum, you can clone hard drive with multiple partitions with HDD or SSD depending on your needs.

Step by step guide: clone a hard drive with multiple partitions

Speaking of how to clone all partitions to SSD, many users don't know how to do it. You can use “Disk Clone” feature in AOMEI Backupper. With it, you can clone several partitions to a new disk at a time.

After cloning, each partition on the target disk will be created at exactly the same size as the source if both disks are the same size. That is to say, each partition is of the same capacity, used space, and free space as the original one.

But if the target disk is larger than the original disk, there will be an unallocated space after cloning and you need to manually adjust the size of partitions on the destination disk. To avoid this problem, you could consider using AOMEI Backupper Professional and its advanced feature, “Edit Partitions” to adjust the size of disk.

Now, start to clone selected partitions to new disk, follow the detailed steps below:

Step 1. Download, install and launch AOMEI Backupper Professional. Select “Disk Clone” under “Clone” tab.

Choose Disk Clone

Step 2. Choose the old disk with multiple partitions (here is disk0), and then click “Next” to continue.

Choose Source Disk 1

Step 3. Choose the destination disk (here is disk1), and then click “Next”.

Choose Destination Partitioned Hdd

Step 4. In this window, you can view the operation summary. In addition, “Sector by sector clone” is optional and “SSD Alignment” is recommended if your destination disk is SSD. Then click “Start Clone”.

  • If you want to clone only system, you can use “System Clone” feature. However, this feature is only available on the paid version. You can upgrade to AOMEI Backupper Professional that works on all the Windows-based operating system, including Windows 7/8/8.1/10/XP/Vista. If your computer is server edition, you can use AOMEI Backupper Server.

Workaround to clone entire hard drive including partitions

If you only want to move data partitions from one hard drive to another, you can try Partition Backup feature in AOMEI Backupper Standard. It allows to you select serveral partitions at a time and backup to a new hard drive. However, you need to one more step. After you backup your data to new hard drive, you still need to restore it. The backup file is an image file which cannot be seen before your restore it.

To backup the selected partitions, you can click “Partition Backup” and select the partitions subsequently you want to backup, then follow the on-screen instructions to finish the rest of steps.
