Why can’t I open documents on my desktop?

Hi! I’ve been using Windows 10 for several months-no problems. When I start my PC today, everything loads and looks as usual, but unable to open any of the folders that I have created on my desktop. I click but nothing happens. Sometimes, the screen will blink and then go back to the desktop (with the icons/folders). But file folders won’t open. Have tried right-click and selected open, the same thing happens. I had previously merged a couple of emails accounts into outlook, but today it shows no other accounts (gmail, yahoo mail) and no mail. I have a lot of mail from both of these accounts. What happened? All suggestion will be appreciated.
