Need to clone Windows Server 2008 (R2) hard drive
Cloning Windows Server 2008 (R2) means transferring Server 2008 operating system to another location like HDD or SSD. Clone allows you transfer data to another storage device in a short time.
After a span of time, your computer may face a problem. As data is increasing day by day, and the spare space is becoming less and less, your computer will become slower and slower. To improve performance, many users choose to buy a new HDD or SSD to keep only OS on it.
Also, you can clone Windows Server as a backup plan, and just achieve the same effect of backing up Windows Server. If system disk is broken, you can boot from the cloned disk immediately. People would like to choose clone system instead of fresh install largely because system clone is much easy and time-saving than a fresh install.
In some cases, users would like to clone Windows Server 2008 R2 in VMware, so that they can deploy same configurations and layout on another hard drive. However, Microsoft Windows misses cloning feature. How could that task be done easily?
Professional software to clone Windows Server 2008 (R2) hard drive
It is a pity that there is no clone function embedded with Windows Server. You can choose to create a system image backup and then use it to restore to another disk. However, this method is also time-consuming.
To perform a Windows Server migration without restoring or reinstalling, it is suggested to turn to third-party cloning software. AOMEI Backupper Server is the cloning software that helps you out of Server 2008 cloning trouble, professional and reliable.
To be specific, the software provides Disk Clone, System Clone and Partition Clone for Windows Server 2008 (R2). You can choose any feature of them based on your own situation. If you clone Windows Server 2008 to SSD, it helps align partitions on SSD, which improves SSD’s performance.
Partitions can be edited if you use disk clone feature. The default cloning method (copy only used sectors) allows you to clone larger drive to smaller drive. If you want to keep every partition as same as it is on the source drive, the sector-by-sector cloning method comes to help.
To perform Windows Server 2008 R2 cloning in VMware, you just need to copy the installation package of AOMEI Backupper and install it in virtual machine operating system. Left operations would be same as you do on a Server.
All features operated with a user-friendly interface, it is easy to use even you are not an expert. Windows Server 2008, 2008 R2, 2012 (R2), 2016, 2019, 2003 and all PC operating systems are supported. Go for it and have a try.
How to clone Windows Server 2008 (R2) step by step?
This tutorial will take system clone as an example. To clone hard drive entirely, please select Disk Clone at Step1.
Step 1. Install and run AOMEI Backupper Server software. Select Clone and then System Clone.
Step 2. C drive and System Reserved Partition (boot related drive) are selected by default. Just choose the destination partition. Then click Next.
Tips: All data on destination disk will be wiped, so backup important files before you start.
Step 3. Check out the operation summary.
Edit the size of partition: If you do not want to leave unallocated space of destination disk after cloning, you can edit partition by clicking Edit the size of partition.
Sector by sector clone: By default, AOMEI Backupper just clones the existing data on the disk and will not clone these deleted data. If you want to copy all the data (whether it has been deleted or not), you can choose the option of “sector by sector" option. The destination disk size must be equal to or larger than the source disk.
Align the partition optimized for SSD: If your destination disk is SSD, it is highly recommended you to tick the box Align the partition optimized for SSD because this feature could improve the speed of reading and writing as well as prolong the service life of SSD.
Step 4. If all the things checked clear, you can click Start Clone.
Dynamic disk cannot be used as destination hard drive while cloning. You need to convert dynamic to basic before system clone.
After cloning process finishes. Now, you can change the boot order to destination disk in BIOS, or remove the old hard drive that contains previous boot drive to test if you can boot from destination disk.
There is still some chance that you cannot boot after cloning, you can also create a bootable media with AOMEI Backupper and boot from bootable media.
