What is transaction log backup in SQL Server

The SQL Server transaction log is a critical component that records all modifications made to the database. It serves as a chronological record of transactions, capturing both committed and uncommitted changes. This log ensures data consistency and enables recovery to a specific point in time, making it an indispensable feature for maintaining the integrity of your SQL Server databases. The transaction log comprises several key components:

  • Log Records: These records contain information about each transaction, including the changes made to the database.
  • Log File: The physical file where the transaction log is stored, typically with a '.ldf' extension.
  • Log Sequence Number (LSN): A unique identifier assigned to each log record, enabling SQL Server to maintain the sequence of transactions.
  • Virtual Log Files (VLFs): The log file is divided into VLFs, each responsible for storing a portion of the transaction log information.
