Why backup is so important for small business?

In this information age, people are used to storing photos, documents, videos, etc. on computers and suchlike devices. Any accident happens to these data could lead to great inconvenience. The same goes for enterprises, except that there are more critical data on more machines.

The best way to avoid data loss is always backup, and the necessity of a proper small business backup strategy is self-evident. According to a study, 70% of small businesses that experience a major data loss go out of business in a year, and that is not inconceivable.

Think about those financial statements, business plans, client information, technical documentation...losing any of these could cost your company a lot of money and reputation, which is a major blow especially for small business without deep pockets.

In this case, a smart business backup plan that can significantly save cost in all aspects is particularly important.

Small Business Backup Stratey

How to set up a small business backup strategy?

To build an enterprise backup strategy for a small business, you should always remember a principle: don’t put all eggs in one basket. Any device has its lifespan and could be faulty or damaged due to various reasons. It's better to create more than one copy for your business data. Therefore, the 3-2-1 backup strategy could be a good choice.

It means to store 2 copies on different storage devices, and 1 for offsite. In practical use, you can do following things:

♦ Keep a local copy as the primary access to the data.
♦ Create a backup to another devices like external hard drive, USB flash drive, etc. as an instant access to whatever data you want to retrieve.
♦ Backup to another Internet or Network location, like cloud drive, network share or NAS. Thus you can restore these data even when your devices break down.

As long as you follow this rule, your important data shall stay safe no matter what happens. But there’s one problem left: the cost of your precious time and effort.

In most of cases, a small business requires more than one computer to perform different tasks. Backing up machine by machine may not be difficult if you company has less than 10 people, but what if there are tons of data stored on dozens of computers?

If you can centrally backup all computers within network on a regular basis, things will get much easier. And that’s not unachievable – you just need an effective centralized backup tool as part of the backup strategy for small business. With it, you won’t be afraid of disaster strikes (such as WannaCry Ransomware) and system break-down.
