How long does it take to backup iPhone?

I have a lot of photos, videos, and other data on my iPhone and would like to save them to iCloud but iPhone backup seems taking forever. I tapped Back Up Now in the morning, but it still had not finished at night. Was it because of the much data?

- Question from Apple Community

To help users easily save iPhone data, Apple adds iCloud as a built-in application on iPhone since 2011. You could find it in iPhone Settings and upload some of iPhone data or all of them to iCloud so as to sync data on another device or restore the whole iPhone data to a new iPhone.

You could have 5GB of free storage in iCloud. If you want to backup files like photos, videos, contacts or game saves, just go to iPhone Settings > [your name] > iCloud to switch on the buttons. If you want to create an iCloud backup, go to iCloud, enter iCloud Backup and tap Back Up Now. If you want to restore this iPhone from iCloud backup, you need to go to iPhone Settings > General > select Erase All Content and Settings first and select Restore from iCloud Backup after restart iPhone.

The steps are simple, but you have the problems like iCloud backup taking too long when you backup iPhone with iCloud for it’s a network application.

iCloud Backup Stuck

Section 1. Why iCloud backup taking forever/iCloud restore stuck?

As is mentioned that you need to use iCloud with Internet, the network connection would be the major factor to influence the process. Besides, because of the features of iOS, your new backup might fail for it is incompatible with the old backup. When you create a new backup, iCloud would make an incremental backup based on your old backup so if you have upgraded iOS, you might come across issues like iCloud backup greyed out.

Section 2. What to do if iCloud backup taking forever?

If your find iPhone backup taking hours, you should not give up backing up iPhone because it is important to regularly save your data. Follow the solutions to check the Internet connection and your iOS to complete iCloud backup.

#1 Restart iPhone: It seems like a universal solution to computer or mobile phone issues, but you need to believe that it really solves most of the problems because it could refresh your system to avoid many bugs.

#2 Check Internet Connection: The speed of the Internet would directly affect iCloud backup progress. Poor network conditions can make iCloud backup slow. You could open Safari to see whether the Internet is available to browse any content. If you find it is very slow, you could try a faster Wi-Fi.

#3 Reduce iCloud backup size: How to make iCloud backup faster? If there is too much content in your backup while your Internet is slow, you could choose to backup less content to quickly finish your backup. Go to iCloud > Manage Storage > tap your device name to see the estimated size of your iCloud backup and you would find that app data would cover much storage. Switch off the button could reduce several GB of iCloud backup content.

#4 Delete old backup: If you have the early iCloud backup, your backup might fail this time for iCloud could not add new content to it. Delete the old backup could release iCloud storage and make start a new iCloud backup.

#5 Update iOS: If you have no old backup but iCloud backup is stuck forever. You might need to upgrade to the latest iOS because iOS bugs would appear from time to time. If Apple received the feedback, it would be repaired in the latest iOS.
