Why Need to Consolidate Incremental Backup?

Before you backup, you should know what incremental backup is and what differential backup is. Basing on the first full backup or the last backup, backing up the changed and new added data is incremental backup. Each backup will create an image file, and all the image files are related together. If we delete the previous file image, the subsequent image is useless. Differential backup is used to back up the changed data based on the last full backup. It is based on full backup and is always based on the image file of the last backup. So if we delete the previous file, the subsequent image isn’t affected.

But when you use backup software to backup, most users choose to create incremental backup. It is fast compared to the differential backup and save disk space. But even so, with the increasing of incremental backups, the disk space is smaller and smaller. Even it is very hard to manage the backup images. For example, you have created a schedule backup by daily, after a week, there are 7 incremental backups; after a month, it is 30; a year later, it is 365. So many backup images occupy your disk space. Maybe you will clean up some data, but you only delete the old and useless images. The rest of images are still many. At this time, how will you do? The best method is to consolidate incremental backups into an image.

How to Consolidate Incremental Backup?

To manage disk space, merging incremental backups is very necessary. But choosing a good software to do it is also very important. AOMEI Backupper Server will be your good assistant. It supports file/folder backup, system backup, partition and disk backup. During incremental backup, there are so many images in computer. How to merge the backup? The steps are as follows:

Step 1: Under “Utilities” tab, click “Merge Images”.

Step 2: Then you will see the following screenshot. Then click “Next”.

Step 3: Then you will find the incremental backups that you have created. There are a full backup and four incremental backups. Then click “Next”.

Step 4: Next name the task, and then you can choose the storage location of consolidated image. Next, click “Proceed” to finish merging the backup images.

Step 5: After finishing it, the interface will come back to “Home”. Here the merged file backup is listed.

Step 6: Click “Advanced” to select “Prosperities”. There is only the full backup, because the incremental backups are merged into a single backup.

All in all, like that, the incremental backups are consolidated into a backup image. It is easy to operate and save the disk space. Besides, AOMEI Backupper is useful for users to solve many problems.

1. If the backup is only one version, you cannot merge.
2. You can only merge incremental backups.
3. During consolidating incremental backups, the software will not delete the old images.
