What is Automated System Recovery?

Automated system recovery is short for ASR which is a feature of Windows XP Pro and Windows Server 2003 operating system that can be used to help system backup and system restore. ASR system is divided into two parts: ASR backup and ASR restore. You can use the “ASR Wizard” to backup part data which contains system status, system service and all disks that is associated with operating system components.

ASR also will create a file which includes information about the backup, disk configuration (including basic volumes and dynamic volume) and how to perform the reduction. When the system prompts in text mode part of the installation process, you can press the F2 key to access the reduction part. ASR will read the disk configuration from the file which is created. It will restore all the disk signature, volume and partition that booting computer needs. ASR will attempt to restore the entire disk configuration, but in some cases it may not be able to do so.
